m.beer777 Sam Hughes celebrates with Hamza Choudhury after scoring for Leicester City against Scunthorpe

Leicester City’s scouting of Michael Keane led to the signing of young centre-back Sam Hughes.

City recruited 20-year-old Hughes on a three-year deal from non-league Chester in the summer and he’s been a hit for the development squad, featuring regularly in their rise to second in the Premier League 2 table.

Hughes has also been a regular on the scoresheet, notching his fourth goal of the campaign in Tuesday night’s 2-1 Checkatrade Trophy win over Scunthorpe.

But it is his ability at the back that caught the eye, and in particular his defensive display against Lincoln last season, the Chester Chronicle have revealed .

After becoming Chester’s youngest-ever captain, aged 19, Hughes began to attract considerable interest from Championship and Premier League clubs, including City.

But to decide if they would make an offer for Hughes, City’s recruitment team sought out m.beer777 clips of then-Burnley defender Keane.

The England international, a one-time City loanee, was a long-term target and was highly rated by the club, who had had several bids rejected for his services.

City scouts analysed Keane’s performance in Burnley’s 1-0 FA Cup fifth round defeat to Lincoln in February to see how he handled 6ft 4in, 16st striker Matt Rhead, whose power had proven to be a serious problem for defences as the Imps earned promotion to League Two and reached the quarter-finals of the Cup.

They then reviewed Hughes’ performance for Chester against Lincoln in the National League in April to see how he coped with Rhead’s physicality.

Comparing Keane and Hughes’ displays, City’s recruitment team were suitably impressed, and bid £130,000 plus add-ons for the youngster’s signature, making him their first signing of the summer.
